Liberal Democrats Question Unity of Conservative Unitary Motion

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Fri 12th Jun 2009

The Liberal Democrats at County Hall have called today's proposed emergency motion by Conservative Cllr William Nunn a very obvious illustration of the split in motivations amongst the new county Tory party.

Liberal Democrat Group Leader, Paul Morse expressed his concern that some new Conservative Councillors were not motivated by County issues, "You have to query whether there are in fact two Tory parties at County Hall, the administration led by Daniel Cox, and the group run by William Nunn. The unorthodox timing of this motion illustrates that a significant section of the new Conservative intake are operating solely on a district based agenda given they have had no time to assimilate County issues. I am worried for the people of Norfolk when we have a vast number of councilors who are solely concentrating on their own personal fiefdoms rather than the County as a whole."

The motion put forward by Cllr Nunn asked the Council to write urgently to the Boundary Committee making formal representation in favour of the two tier system of local government for Norfolk and expressly removing any endorsement for any model of unitary government for the County.

The Chairman declined to have the motion debated and rather called a special meeting of the Council on 6th July to discuss the motion.
